Hand Washing: Controlling Infection at Home

Are you the primary caregiver in your family? Whether you’re caring for your aging parent, an injured child, or a recently-discharged spouse, you have to steer clear from infection. You don’t want to spread infection at home by being mindless about the unseen army of germs and bacteria.

As providers of home health care services in Girard Avenue, Pennsylvania, we advocate on frequent hand washing as the leading protective activity against infection at home.

When do you need to wash your hands? Wash your hands…

  • When they are dirty / have touched blood or unclean body fluids such as vomit, spit, or pus
  • Before and after using the toilet
  • Before preparing and eating food
  • Before and after tending to the sick patient
  • After cleaning the house, throwing the garbage, washing dirty laundry
  • After coughing / sneezing

How do you wash your hands? Preferably under a running water, wash your hands in the following steps:

  1. Wash hands together palm to palm.
  2. Wash the back of your left hand using the palm of your right hand and vice versa.
  3. Wash your fingers by rubbing them with the opposite set with palms facing each other.
  4. Wash the back of your fingers with the palm of the other hand while the fingers are interlocked.
  5. Rub each finger using the other hand starting with the thumb and vice versa.
  6. Rub the tip of your fingers with the palm of the other hand and vice versa.
  7. Do these steps for about two minutes (or while you’re humming the Happy Birthday song once).

Hand washing could mean the worst in the family if you miss practicing it. If someone is recuperating at home, it’s advisable that the rest of the family should also perform this hand washing practice to protect every member from unwelcome infection.
